Functional Medicine is a new model of healthcare that combines the best elements of conventional and integrative medicine.  It’s emergence is an inevitable response to the highly specialized approach of western practice. The guiding principle of Functional Medicine is its emphasis on the body as an integrated system, not as independent organs divided into medical specialties.  Its focus is the discovery and treatment of root causes of an illness, rather than the treatment of symptoms.  Of equal importance, the relationship between the practitioner and patient is critical to the outcome.

For individuals who suffer acute life-threatening events, Western medicine performs miracles in emergency rooms and operating rooms,  Most of us, fortunately, don't face such crises.  Instead, we experience chronic diminishing health due to lifestyle choices, stress, environmental impacts and genetic predispositions.  A Functional Medicine approach addresses all of these factors with the patient to determine a treatment strategy.

Our first visit provides me with thorough medical and lifestyle histories. During this process, I listen carefully to understand individual strengths and vulnerabilities, as well as specific concerns. With this knowledge, I am better able to suggest simple steps that often relieve troubling symptoms

In follow-up visits, we collaborate to monitor progress and refine strategies.  This is important because lifestyles changes are often resisted by long standing routines.  As an accountability partner, I can encourage these positive changes.  If needed, I will suggest specific diagnostic tests that can shed light on individual biochemistry.

Acupuncture and acupressure work synergistically with Functional Medicine by inducing a deeply relaxed state which promotes a biological cascade of healing.  It increases circulation and enhances communication between body systems, as well as interrupting pain signaling.
